$250,000 grant presented at Salvation Army “Backpack Day”

The Salvation Army Allentown Corps held its annual “Backpack Giveaway & Community Street Fair,” 10 a.m. - 2 p.m. Aug. 20, at 144 N. Eighth St., Allentown.

Prior to the event, State Sen. Nick Miller (D-14th) and The Salvation Army announced a $250,000 state investment secured by Miller’s office to help fund renovations to the organization’s housing shelter. The announcement was at 9:40 a.m. with the check presentation at 9:50 a.m. Aug. 20.

According to an Aug. 7 press release from Miller’s office, the funding, secured by Miller in July, will help modernize the shelter with renovations, including new roof, HVAC upgrades, electrical and lighting improvements, kitchen and bathroom renovations, updated flooring and signs, improved entryways and sidewalk enhancements.

The improvements are intended to strengthen the facility’s ability to provide safe, reliable housing and services for individuals and families in need.

Following the check presentation, The Salvation Army hosted its annual “Backpack Giveaway & Community Street Fair,” providing children with free backpacks filled with school supplies.

Families had the opportunity to connect with community vendors offering community resources and support services. There were special giveaways.

The event was free and open to the public.

There were 1,400 backpacks filled with grade-level school supplies by 25 volunteers from PPL Electric Utilities.

The Salvation Army holds Sunday School, 10:30 a.m. Sunday; Weekly Service, noon Sunday; Junior Church Sunday, 12:30 p.m. Sunday; Women’s Ministry, 6:30 p.m. Tuesday; Men’s Bible Study, 6:30 p.m. Tuesday, and Prayer Meeting, 7 p.m. Thursday.
