A preliminary hearing is set for Aug. 25 for a Northampton man arrested Aug. 11 for child sex-related offenses.
Michael A. Dempsey Jr., 40, is reportedly a captain with the Northampton Borough Fire Department.
Following an investigation and subsequent apprehension by borough police, Dempsey was charged with two counts of aggravated indecent assault involving a person under the age of 16, unlawful contact with a minor involving sexual offenses and corruption of minors, all felonies.
According to reports, the alleged incident took place Aug. 1, 2018. The female minor was 14 at the time, and Dempsey was 32.
The complaint alleges Dempsey sexually assaulted the girl in the garage of a Northampton residence.
A post on the Northampton Borough Fire Department Facebook page acknowledges Dempsey’s status as member of the borough station.
“The Northampton Borough Fire Department is aware that criminal charges have been filed against volunteer firefighter Michael Dempsey Jr.
“The department conducts criminal-background and child-abuse-clearance checks of its members as required by law and the conduct alleged is inconsistent with the values and standards of the Northampton Fire Department. Mr. Dempsey has been suspended from the department, effective immediately, pending further review.
“Residents can be assured that this matter will not disrupt the department’s service to the borough of Northampton or the surrounding communities.
“This being a pending legal matter, the department has no further comment.”
Dempsey was unable to post $50,000 bail and was remanded to Northampton County Prison.
He is scheduled to appear 11 a.m. Aug. 25 before Magisterial District Judge Robert A. Hawke.
