Macungie Borough council appointed two new planning commission members and filled a vacancy on the zoning hearing board during its July 20 meeting at the Macungie Institute.

Council approved the appointment of Ricky Moyer to the planning commission by a 6-1 vote, with Councilman Greg Hutchison casting the lone dissenting vote. Bernie Reinert was also appointed to the commission by a 6-1 vote, with Hutchison again voting no.

The council also accepted the resignation of Bob Bogert from the zoning hearing board. Officials said Bogert stepped down because of his affiliation with the water authority. To fill the vacancy, council appointed Bob Parupalli as a full member of the board.

Council members noted there is an ongoing need for alternate members on the zoning hearing board. Residents interested in serving in that capacity are encouraged to contact the borough office.

Representatives of Kay Builders addressed council regarding the walking path and fencing at the Fields of Brookside development. The developer proposed replacing existing wooden split-rail fencing with vinyl fencing. Council heard the proposal and said it would continue reviewing the matter.

A resident raised concerns about speeding on Buttonwood Street, saying motorists and buses frequently travel above the 25 mph speed limit. Officials acknowledged speeding complaints are common in the area and noted such concerns should be directed to the mayor.

Council also discussed the potential use of temporary speed bumps to help reduce speeding. Officials said the devices are relatively affordable and can be moved to different locations as needed. The next meeting is scheduled for 7:30 p.m. Aug. 3.
