South Whitehall honors Fire Marshal John Frantz for 31 years of service
The South Whitehall Township Board of Commissioners recognized fire marshal and building code official John G. Frantz during its July 1 meeting, honoring him for more than three decades of service to the township as he prepares to retire.
Board President Jacob Roth presented Frantz with the township’s Distinguished Service Award, recognizing his 31 years of service from March 10, 1995, through July 3. The proclamation praised Frantz’s dedication as fire marshal and building code official, noting he had “provided a wonderful example and inspiration to all through your unwavering commitment.”
Roth thanked Frantz not only for his years of service, but also for his family’s long-standing commitment to the community. “We will truly miss you,” Roth said. “You are held in high regard by the members of the staff, members of the board and members of our first responder organizations. We could not be more grateful for your service.”
Roth also recognized the legacy of public service established by Frantz’s father and grandfather, calling it “a really wonderful legacy.”
Frantz reflected on his career, recalling the many commissioners, township employees and emergency responders with whom he worked over the years.
“I’d like to thank the commissioners, present and past,” Frantz said. “I’d like to thank the professional staff that I’ve served with over the years, the emergency services personnel, the police department and especially the fire departments for helping me along the way. It’s been great. It’s an honor to have served.”
Commissioner Diane Kelly, participating remotely, praised Frantz’s knowledge and professionalism, describing him as “a walking Wikipedia.”
“Good evening, John. It’s my privilege to recognize and celebrate you this evening as you retire after 31 years of exceptional service to our township as fire marshal and building code official,” Kelly said.
Kelly also thanked Frantz for his support of volunteer firefighters, first responders, township staff and elected officials.
In other business, the board unanimously approved preliminary/final land development plans for a solar array at St. Joseph the Worker Catholic Church. According to Director of Community Development Kent Baird, the project includes the consolidating existing parcels and construction of a solar array on property east of Applewood Drive. The system will generate electricity exclusively for the church property.
Baird said the proposal underwent extensive review by township staff, consulting engineers and the planning commission. Revisions addressed site details and pedestrian access.
Commissioner Glenn Guanowski commended the parish for investing in renewable energy. “I just want to express appreciation to St. Joseph the Worker for utilizing renewable green energy sources,” Guanowski said. “I think that’s increasingly important in our community.” Commissioner Sharon Fehringer-Ricker echoed those remarks, saying she agreed “1,000 percent.”
