Northampton County Emergency Management Services is sharing some safety tips pertaining to extreme heat. Extreme heat is a period of high heat and humidity with temperatures above 90 degrees Fahrenheit for at least two to three days.

In extreme heat, your body works extra hard to maintain a normal temperature, which can lead to death. Extreme heat is responsible for the highest number of annual deaths among all weather-related hazards.

Keep yourself safe during extreme heat activities. Drink plenty of fluids, stay in an air-conditioned room, stay out of the sun, take extra precautions such as wearing lightweight and loose-fitting clothing, limit strenuous activities to early morning or evening and take action when you see symptoms of heat exhaustion and heat stroke.

Check up on relatives and neighbors, and do not leave young children and pets in unattended vehicles as car interiors reach lethal temperatures in a matter of minutes.

To reduce risk during outdoor work, the Occupational Safety and Health Administration recommends scheduling frequent rest breaks in shaded or air-conditioned environments. Anyone overcome by heat should be moved to a cool and shaded location as heat stroke is an emergency.

If you do not have air conditioning in your home or lack shelter, you can call 211 or check with your local municipality for assistance locating appropriate shelter from the heat.
