Wanderers gets Legion win

A six-run fourth inning propelled Wanderers to a 18-7 win over Northampton in NorCo Legion baseball Friday in Bethlehem.

Playing as the away team, Wanderers batted around in the top of the fourth and turned a one-run game into a 9-2 lead.

After Brady Heffernan, Rocco Sciarra and Colin Panik at the bottom of the batting order all reached to load the bases, Colden Wainwright singled to score Heffernan.

“In the last three games, we have scored 63 runs or something like that,” said Paul Walsh, Wanderers manager. “We have really been hitting well, top to bottom. In the last couple of games, it has been our bottom guys.”

With the bases still loaded, Drew Erfle cleared them with a triple, making it 7-2, Wanderers.

They added another run when Brayden Kashner tripled home Erfle and the inning’s sixth run when Kashner scored on a ground out by Willie Cruz.

After Northampton scored a run in the bottom of the fourth, Wanderers scored six more runs in the fifth, sending 12 men to the plate and it was again the bottom of the order getting things started.

Heffernan, Sciarra and Panik again all reached, though Sciarra was out at second base on Panik’s fielder’s choice.

With runners on the corners, Heffernan scored on a wild pitch. Then, Erfle singled home Panik to give Wanderers an 11-3 lead.

David Dunham then reached on an error, which allowed Erfle to score, and Dunham scored on a wild pitch. Kashner walked and Cruz singled, with both scoring on a single by Jacob Matthews to give Wanderers a 15-3 lead.

Not only did Erfle have four RBIs at the plate, he threw 4 plus innings on the mound, striking out six.

“Drew has been one of our most consistent pitchers,” Walsh said. “Up until tonight, he was struggling a bit hitting-wise. He came out like gangbusters the first couple of games. Tonight, getting the triple, that is a good way to get off the schneid.”

Erfle left the mound, but stayed in the game to play the field, in the fifth after taking a ball off of his ankle.

Northampton scored four runs in the fifth inning to extend the game, making it 15-7.

Wanderers added three more insurance runs in the seventh when Heffernan doubled to score Kashner, who walked, and Cruz, who doubled. Then, Heffernan scored on a sacrifice fly by Panik.

After Erfle, Cruz, Sciarra and Heffernan finished the game on the mound for Wanderers.

Wanderers led throughout, scoring one run in each of the first three innings to lead 3-0.

In the first inning, Dunham singled and scored on a Kashner single. Heffernan walked and scored on a Wainwright single in the second. Then in the third inning, Kashner doubled and scored on a Cruz single.

Northampton cut the lead to 3-2 with two runs in the third inning before Wanderers broke it open.

“If you looked at the score, you would think this was not a close game, but it was only 3-0 in the (top of) the third inning,” Walsh said. “Those first three runs came with two out, so there is also opportunistic hitting, which we have been doing really well. I am super proud of them. We are just going to try to keep it rolling.”

The win moved Wanderers to 7-0-1 on the season with games scheduled for Monday, Wednesday and today (Thursday).
