Tanner the final Dogmanits in 10-year string

There is only one left.

For the better part of the last 10-plus years, the name Dogmanits has played a prominent role in the Whitehall boys’ basketball program.

But their determined, tenacious playing style can be traced back 30 years.

Father Eric Dogmanits was a standout, gritty player in the early to mid-90s, being a sharpshooting complement to star Pete Lisicky under legendary head coach Ron Hassler.

Uncle Steve Dogmanits earned American Football Coaches All-American status as a safety at Fairfield University. As a safety, he intercepted 11 passes in one season.

The elder Dogmanits later joined head coach Jeff Jones’ staff, and he played an integral role in guiding sons, Trey, Talon, and Tanner through the program over the last 10 years. His three sons also played prominent roles on the football field.

It has truly been all in the family.

This fall, only Tanner remains as he will begin his senior season on the field and the hardwood.

Eldest son Trey helped the Zephyrs’ football team to a district title. The 5-10 Dogmanits wasn’t your prototypical quarterback in terms of his build, but he managed to throw for a school-record 4,744 yards with 47 touchdowns. In the process, Dogmanits led the Zephyrs to a pair of District 11 Class 5A titles. Following in his family footsteps, Dogmanits took his leadership skills to the basketball court. He took his football game to Wilkes University, where he will compete for the quarterback job as a junior this fall.

Talon, the second youngest, had the chance to play with Tanner as well as Trey. He served as Trey’ and Tenner prime target. Talon, who will play football at Bloomsburg University in the fall, cherished the moments.

“It was very fun, and it probably won’t happen again,” noted Talon. “The connection allowed me to succeed and practicing my whole life with them at quarterback really helped when we got on the field, and I think it showed.”

Now, Tanner is left to carry the torch. Ironically, the Zephyrs lost a number of seniors from last year’s 5-7 squad, and Tanner will be in the spotlight after his banner season.

Tanner threw for 2,293 yards with 24 touchdowns and five interceptions, taking over for Trey last season. He played the point guard on the basketball team.

The brothers aren’t likely to play on the same team again, but they could face each other as rivals on the football fields in the future.

Whitehall head coach Jeff Jones knew he made the right move by adding Eric Dogmanits to his staff.

“The Dogmanitses have been an integral part of our basketball program for many years,” said Jones. “I saw the work that Eric did with our young kids from Hokey and when we had an opening on our staff we were happy to have him join us. He coached many of the guys who ended up being major contributors to our program, including two 1000 point scorers in Luke Keppel and then A.J, Hines.

“The added benefit of having Coach Dogmanits is him bringing along his three sons. Trey, Talon, and Tanner all have been huge contributors to our basketball team for the last several years.”

The brothers truly made a difference.

“Trey was on a really talented team and was a valuable player off the bench and hit a huge shot in the District 11 semifinal to propel us into the finals his senior season.

“Talon was a three-year starter who contributed on both ends of the floor as much as any player I can remember. He handled the point guard and covered the opponent’s best player for all of those years.

“Tanner, a rising senior, shared guard duties with Talon last year and will be asked to be more of a scorer this year than in the past as we will have a very young squad this season.”

Jones relished Trey’s and Talon’s contributions, and he is looking forward to Tanner’s final season.

“The Dogmanitses competed like no other group of brothers,” beamed Jones. “They have a strong desire to win and challenge their opponents each and every night. We are really happy to have Tanner around for this upcoming season.”
