Connie Mack team eying postseason run
With the regular season winding down, Northampton can put itself in a good position for the Connie Mack postseason.
The Konkrete Kids began the week with an 8-2-1 mark. They did have a seven-game undefeated string (6–0-1) snapped with a recent 10-4 loss to Southern Lehigh. During that stretch, the Kids posted impressive wins over Saylorsburg (14-0) and Freemansburg Township/North Bethlehem (9-2).
Manager Chad Werkheiser has liked what he has seen.
“The season is going well so far,” said the first-year skipper. “The boys have been playing a good brand of team baseball right now.”
Werkheiser sees his team as a whole, rather than some outstanding pieces.
“We are playing good team baseball,“ he said. “We really haven’t had anyone stand out above the rest.
“We had some tough stretches, but our boys have risen to the occasion. Our pitching staff has been amazing, and we are hitting the ball soundly and consistently.”
In spite of their team concept, the Kids have impressive numbers at the plate and on the mound.
They are hitting .332 as a team with Matt Buskirk leading the way with a team-high .556 average as well as a team-high 15 hits. He is followed in the .400 club by William Burrell (.444, 12 hits), Garrett Allabach (.429), and Kaye Ibarra (.400, 12 RBIs).
Jake Raysely lead the .300 hitters with a .381 clip followed by Darren Spengler (.353), Logan Rusnock and Mason Martisofski (.333), Ty Rutzmoser (.320, 12 hits), and Bryton Kovach (.300).
On the mound, Raysely has been stellar with a 2-0 record, a 0.47 ERA, 32 strikeouts in 14.1 innings. Allabach is 3-0 with a 1.90 ERA, and Buskirk is 1-0.
The Kids are in their final stretch of the season with six regular-season games left beginning with a game at South Parkland Friday.
Werkheiser believes his team can continue their momentum down the stretch.
“Matt Buskirk and Will Burrell have been the strongest bats the last 2 weeks, and Nate Kovach and Garrett Allabach have been the anchors on the mound,” said Werkheiser. “With six games left in the season, I’m looking for our team to make a strong finish heading into the league playoffs.”
