Salisbury High School recognizes seniors in annual awards ceremony

The Salisbury High School Academic and Service Awards Program took place May 27 at Salisbury High School in the school auditorium.

Approximately 50 students were recognized, with many of them having their names called multiple times for numerous awards. Principal Dr. Heather Morningstar, Assistant Principal Jane Brennan, Director of Student Activities Sarah Oswald and School Counselor Allison Moyer announced many of the awards. School Board President Joseph Gnall and Superintendent Lynn Fuini-Hetten were special guests at the event.

Members of the Class of 1974, community members and family members whose loved ones are memorialized through the numerous scholarships presented awards to the students. Presenters took a few minutes to describe the award and how each student’s involvement and academic performances led to their decisions about the selections.

While many of the students were recognized with multiple awards, Soledad Lausch made the most trips to the stage for seven awards. Lausch was recognized as a School Board Representative, The Robert R. Gross III Leadership Award recipient, The Outstanding Social Studies Student recipient, an Athletic Booster Club Essay Scholarship Award recipient, Student Government Award, U.S. Marine Corps Semper Fi Award and the U.S. Marine Corps Scholastic Excellence Award for being recognized as the class valedictorian.

Meredith Kelley followed Lausch with four awards including a School Board Representative Award, the Marsie Barth Memorial Scholarship, the Michele Honochick Memorial Scholarship and Outstanding Language Arts Student.

Anthony Jarjous, Samuel Krauss, Steven Lozada and Riley Nemitz led the number of awards for the male students for the evening program.

Dana Thompson received two awards that totaled $69,000 in scholarships. Thompson was awarded the Rensselaer Award for $40,000 and a $29,000 Engineering & Technology Award from The Rochester Institute of Technology. Megan Basile presented both awards to Thompson. Betty Thompson, mother of Dana, shared that she was proud of her daughter and appreciates how impactful these scholarships are for females entering the STEM fields.

Many of the presenters displayed emotional acknowledgments displaying the profound significance that these scholarships have for these current students. They described their loved ones who are honored in these awards and how they see the qualities of their loved ones continue through the pursuits of these young people.

The Class of 1974 organized a scholarship in memory of their classmate Mark Turbedsky. Ishwari Torres earned this recognition this year for her resilience in overcoming obstacles and achieving goals. Torres’ teacher Sarah Kehl was present to support her student and this proud moment of accomplishment.

“I’m so darn proud of her,” Kehl said.

It was noted that the members of the Class of 1974 who celebrated their 50th anniversary in 2024 have raised (and continue to raise) enough money to keep this scholarship going for decades.

Morningstar thanked the audience and invited them to the cafeteria for a reception. She also reminded students to prepare notes of appreciation to send to the families and community organizations who support their future endeavors. Additional students were recognized in slides for awards and scholarships that had been provided at earlier ceremonies.
