Scouts build stands for church event

Nearly 20 Scouts from several troops labored at St. Mary’s Roman Catholic Church June 7 — their task to create new wooden game stands for the church’s upcoming block party as a Scout community project.

Some of the Scouts and leaders are in the Scouts’ Order of the Arrow. The purpose of the Order of the Arrow, Scouting America’s national honor society, is to recognize Scouts who best exemplify the Scout oath and law and foster a lifelong commitment to leadership, cheerful service and environmental stewardship.

Peter Paone, of North Catasauqua, and Matthew Hank, an assistant Scoutmaster of Troop 431, were among several leaders of the project.

The workers and leaders were busy laying out, assembling and painting the wood pieces of the stands. They appeared to be well organized, following a plan that provided efficiency in their labor.

Kim McCurdy, a leader at St. Mary’s and a consummate St. Mary’s church volunteer, was on hand to observe and assist as needed.

At the end of the work session, the stands were done and will certainly help the upcoming church event.

The work was a great tutorial for young people to teach them how to develop the skills of teamwork and gain goal-oriented behavior.

St. Mary’s block party is scheduled for 6-9 p.m. June 25 and 26 and 5-9 p.m. June 27 at the church, 122 Union St., Catasauqua.
