Hornets repeat as D-11 champs

The senior class of the Emmaus High School boys volleyball team had more to accomplish.

After falling to Whitehall in the Eastern Pennsylvania Conference semifinal round, the Hornets regrouped and won two straight matches to get to the District 11 3A championship match.

The opponent waiting for them was that same Zephyrs team.

This time around, Emmaus turned the tide and swept Whitehall last Tuesday night at Catasauqua High School, by scores of 25-21, 25-16, 25-22, to win its second straight district title. It was also the 23rd overall championship for the program. The district run concluded with just one defeat in a set in three matches.

“Losing to them in EPCs was tough for us,” said senior setter Ben Skekel. “They ended our run at back-to-back conference titles, but we knew there was still more ahead of us and we made sure to work to achieve our goals. It feels great getting another district title and going out on top as a senior, especially being able to get a little revenge on Whitehall.”

The EPC MVP, Miles Boulrice, led the offense with 17 kills and added nine digs. Bilaal Kerim tallied 12 kills and five digs. Grayson Answini recorded 10 kills and eight digs. Skekel finished with 40 assists and eight digs. Jesse Owusu contributed a team-high 14 digs.

“It was an all-around great team performance,” Skekel said. “Everyone contributed tonight and really had great nights. We needed all of us to be on top of our games to beat a great team like that.”

Emmaus, which improved to 16-3 overall, advanced to the state tournament for the second straight year. The Hornets hosted a first-round state match when they welcomed the District 3’s third-place team, Hempfield, Tuesday. Whitehall also qualified for states and traveled to Abington Heights, the District 2 one seed.

“As a senior, we’re just happy to be able to play more volleyball together,” said Skekel. “Winning feels great, yes, and winning championships, but we are a close team and are really looking forward to more volleyball together.”
