Boys volleyball drops semifinal

The Parkland High School boys volleyball team entered the District 11 3A playoffs last week as the Eastern Pennsylvania Conference champion.

Following a quarterfinal round victory over Dieruff last Tuesday, May 19t the roles were reversed in the semifinals as the fourth-seeded Zephyrs got revenge for a loss in the league title game. Whitehall beat the top-seeded Trojans in straight sets this past Thursday night at Catasauqua High School.

In the other semifinal, third-seeded Emmaus downed second-seeded Freedom in four sets.

In the victory over the Huskies, Parkland won by scores of 25-11, 25-16, 25-19. Jude Ruisch led the attack with 17 kills and one block, while Zeke Gordner finished with 12 kills, one block and one ace. Gabe Chase tallied 40 assists and three aces and Owen Barnett recorded 12 digs and two aces.

Scores from the match with the Zephyrs were 18-25, 18-25, 17-25. Stats were not yet made available at the time of print.

Parkland finished with a 16-4 overall record and 10-2 mark in the conference. The Trojans will graduate four seniors, including Chase, Ryan Kearney, Ruisch and Bear Jacobs.

Whitehall went on to take on Emmaus in the championship match this past Tuesday night back at Catasauqua. Emmaus and Whitehall have met in the district final four times (2011, 2013, 2017, and 2018), with the Green Hornets coming out on top in all four matches.
