Animal hospital lauded for K-9 services

A Lehigh Valley animal hospital was lauded for its services to the Salisbury Township Police Department K-9 Patrol.

Salisbury Township Police Cpl. K-9 Kyle Watson said, “The unsung heroes are the staff at the Upper Saucon Animal Hospital.

“They are always present and they care and they follow up,” Watson said at the June 11 Salisbury Township board of commissioners meeting.

“The staff always takes care of our dogs,” said Watson, who has been in charge of Echo, a 3-year-old Belgian Malinois, for two years.

Knox, another Salisbury Township Police K-9 dog, is in training.

Watson presented Dr. Theodore R. Zajac III, VMD, owner of Upper Saucon Animal Hospital, Inc. with a granite plaque “in acknowledgment and appreciation for their veterinary services towards K-9 care.”

Zajac and his staff, including Caitlin Gallagher, vet nurse; Katie Schmidt, CVT; Kailie Tshilis, CSR, and Rebecca Heflin, CVT, accepted the award. Not present from Upper Saucon Animal Hospital was Jenn Roscher.

Upper Saucon Animal Hospital is at 2849 Pike Ave.

In other business at the June 11 meeting, commissioners voted 3-0, with two commissioners absent to approve:

- Resolution to apply for grant funding of $316,390 through the Pennsylvania First Grant for the purchase of a paver. Township Commissioner Alok Patnaik made the motion, seconded by township Commissioner Allison Leayman, to bring the resolution to a vote.

- Resolution to offer $500 to Lehigh County Tax Claim for the purchase of a parcel on Crestmont Street, adjacent to township property. Leayman made the motion, seconded by Patnaik, to bring the resolution to a vote.

- Resolution to approve the sale of a firearm to Officer Brian Zulic, who retired. Patnaik made the motion, seconded by Leayman, to bring the resolution to a vote.

- Resolution to approve the sale of a firearm to Officer Jason Laky, who retired. Leayman made the motion, seconded by Patnaik, to bring the resolution to a vote.

- Motion to approve the appointment of Melissa Gallo to fill an open seat on the Environmental Advisory Council (5th Ward). Patnaik made the motion, seconded by Leayman, to bring the motion to a vote.

- Motion to approve invoices from Bracalente Construction, LLC, for the 2026-2027 equipment rental contract of $71,468.53. Patnaik made the motion, seconded by Leayman, to bring the motion to a vote.

- Motion to request the eligibility list from the Civil Service Commission. Patnaik made the motion, seconded by Leayman, to bring the motion to a vote.

- Motion authorizing hiring of entry-level police officers from the eligibility list. Patnaik made the motion, seconded by Leayman, to bring the motion to a vote. Commissioners held a 10-minute executive session before the vote.

An virtual executive session was held at 3 p.m. June 11 for real estate, board of commissioners President Debra J. Brinton announced.

The Salisbury Township meeting schedule in the municipal building, 2900 S. Pike Ave, is: 7 p.m. June 17, Environmental Advisory Council; 7 p.m. June 24, Planning Commission, canceled, and 7 p.m. June 25, Board Of Commissioners.
