22nd SouthSide Film Fest unreels in Bethlehem

The 22nd SouthSide Film Festival (SSFF) screened films from the Lehigh Valley and around the world, June 10 through June 13, Cathedral Church of the Nativity, PBS39, SteelStacks Banko Ale House Cinemas and Touchstone Theatre, all on Bethlehem’s southside.

The opening night SSFF party was 6 p.m. June 10, Comfort Suites, also on the southside.

“Fork in the Road” and the short films, “Forever Green” and “Sunday Mornings at the Beach,” screened at 8 p.m. June 10, Sayre Room, Cathedral Church.

Screenings began at 5:20 p.m. June 11, 12 and 1:20 p.m. June 13.

The format is mostly blocks of films by genre, including animation, comedy, drama, documentary, and LGBTQ.

Filmmakers were to attend some of the Q&A sessions.

A late-night screening of “intriguing and out-of-the-ordinary collection of comedy, horror and animated short films” was 11:20 p.m. June 12, Banko Ale House Cinemas.

The closing-night screening was “If These Walls Could Rock,” 7:20 p.m. June 13, Cathedral Church.

The closing-night party was 9 p.m. June 13, Upstairs at the Goose.

Some of the films were screened multiple times. Here was a preview:

“Defining Moments: The Life & Leadership of Quiet Revolutionary Frances Hesselbein” (45 mins.). The documentary film is about the first national CEO of Girl Scouts of the U.S.A.

“Fighting More Than Fire” (85 mins.). The documentary film is about the history of Black firefighters in Tulsa, Okla.

“Fork in the Road” (88 mins.). The documentary, narrated by Nick Offerman, an executive producer of the film, is about farmers, chefs and innovators working to improve the food system.

“Hollywood’s Mermaid: The Esther WIlliams Story” (21 mins.). The documentary film is about the swimming champion and Hollywood movie star.

“If These Walls Could Rock” (90 mins.) The documentary film is about the Sunset Marquis, a West Hollywood hotel. Interviewees include Ringo Starr, Slash, Cyndi Lauper, Morrissey and Dave Grohl.

“Il Mio Posto a Tavola” (“My Place at the Table”) (56 mins.). A documentary film about the emotional complexities of adoption.

“Your Attention Please” (98 mins.) A documentary film about a high school that goes phone-free.
