Onia, Smith back on field
Liberty first baseman Leah Onia and Liberty pitcher Addy Smith will play in the Lehigh Valley Diamond Classic, a senior all-star softball game, on June 10 at Pates Park, Allentown.
Onia and Smith will play on the East team along with seniors from Freedom, Easton, Wilson, Bangor, Pen Argyl, Nazareth, Northampton, Catasauqua, Notre Dame-Green Pond, Saucon Valley, Pocono Mountain East, Stroudsburg, and East Stroudsburg South.
“It will be a new experience, all of us coming off seasons where we worked so hard, but I want to take it in and have fun, and be together for one last hurrah,” Onia said.
Onia was a strong offensive player for the Hurricanes, batting in the top of the lineup.
“I love putting the bat on the ball, and I’m proud of how I’ve learned to swing,” she said.
Onia’s coaches and teammates could count on the Hurricane first baseman for big hits throughout the season.
“It was an unbelievable feeling, getting two (home runs) against Beca this year,” said Onia. “My teammates were telling me I needed to do it again after the first one, and we made [the mercy rule] happen.”
Liberty finished the 2026 season with a record of 11-11 and qualified for conference and district playoffs.
“We had a very underclassmen-heavy team this year,” Onia said. “It was bittersweet, going in with girls I’ve been playing with and then the new girls who were freshmen and sophomores, but we became more of a unit.”
Onia and Smith will face a similar situation in the Lehigh Valley Diamond Classic.
“I’m very competitive,” Onia said. “I want to play at a high level and have a good time, and I think I perform best when I’m more relaxed.”
Notre Dame coach Grant Lilly, for whom Onia played on travel teams for seven years, will coach East.
