Guman, Duro to play in Diamond Classic
Freedom outfielder Landry Guman and Freedom pitcher/second baseman Namelia Duro will play in the Lehigh Valley Diamond Classic, a senior all-star softball game, on June 10 at Pates Park, Allentown.
Guman and Duro will play on the East team along with seniors from Liberty, Easton, Wilson, Bangor, Pen Argyl, Nazareth, Northampton, Catasauqua, Notre Dame-Green Pond, Saucon Valley, Pocono Mountain East, Stroudsburg, and East Stroudsburg South.
“I’m really excited, playing one last time because I’m not playing in college,” said Guman, who will be attending Penn State University this fall to major in communications.
Guman was successful this season in the leadoff spot for the Patriots.
“It was definitely a change,” she said. “Last year, I didn’t get to play much because I had club volleyball. This year, travel volleyball ended earlier and was more local. It was better because I loved playing softball at Freedom and had so many friends on the team.”
Batting in the leadoff position was initially stressful for the senior outfielder.
“I talked with (Coach) Jeff (Pronovich) because he could tell I was mentally struggling and a little nervous, but he said, ‘You only lead off once.’ It was fun, getting it started,” Guman said.
Guman was known as a contact hitter and maybe even more well-known for her speed, going 16-for-16 in stolen bases.
“Jeff told me I don’t need a sign, and that I could decide, but I was not stealing on (Northampton’s) Hannah Duerr because I knew she had an arm,” said Guman. “I was not going on her.”
In arguably the biggest steal of her high school career, Guman scored the game-winning run after a double steal that included Duro to win this year’s Eastern Pennsylvania Conference championship for the Pates.
“I’m just so grateful,” Guman said. “It was the best season we’ve had since I’ve been here. It was so fun, and I’m grateful to be part of it. We were all so close and happy to succeed and do well.”
