‘We are so grateful’

Community, borough groups donate camp supplies after recent vandalism

Catasauqua Borough recently put out a call for help, and the community showed up big time.

Due to recent vandalism, supplies to be used for the upcoming kids summer program were destroyed, according to the borough’s June 3 social media post.

Given that the program is set to start June 15, organizers quickly asked the community to help replenish the kid-friendly activities that will be used.

Organizers were seeking donations of construction paper, markers, crayons, glue sticks, scissors, stickers, coloring books, craft kits, jump ropes, hula hoops, cards, board and other games and more.

“The kids summer program is a free program offered by the borough for children entering first through sixth grades, with the only cost to families being occasional optional field trips. With the program beginning June 15, there is very little time to replace the items that were lost,” the Facebook post stated. “Donations from the community will help us restock supplies quickly, so we can continue offering a fun, safe and engaging program at no cost to participating families.”

North Catasauqua Police Department, on its social media page June 5, said, “After learning about the incident, we reached out to see how we could help. With a team effort between the North Catasauqua Police Association, the Catasauqua Fire Department and the North Catasauqua Fire Department, we were able to obtain a list of needed items and quickly begin restocking their supplies.

“This is just a small example of what can be accomplished when organizations come together to support our community. We hope these donations help the staff continue providing a fun, safe and positive summer experience for the children in the program,” the Facebook post stated.

Catasauqua Police Department also took part in collecting donations from the community and shared a photo of the items in a recent Facebook post.

“We are absolutely overwhelmed in the best way,” Catasauqua Borough said in a Facebook post June 8. “After our post about the kids summer program supplies being destroyed, the response from our community has been incredible. Between monetary donations and donated supplies, it feels like Christmas in the borough office.”

The post also related volunteers and staff are excited to welcome borough youth with “so many opportunities for fun.”

“We would love the opportunity to share these donations and activities with even more children in our community,” the posted continued. “At this time, we are continuing to seek additional staff support in order to maintain a safe 1:10 staff-to-participant ratio.”

While organizers are seeking staff assistance, the borough no longer needs donations.

“Thanks to the incredible generosity of our community, the program has been restocked and is ready to welcome the kids for a fun-filled summer.

“To everyone who donated, shared the post, reached out or helped spread the word — thank you. Lehigh Valley showed up for these kids, and we are so grateful,” the post related.
