Memorial Day ceremony held at Fogelsville Cemetery
The Fogelsville Community Memorial Day Ceremony, held May 25, brought together veterans’ organizations, community groups and residents at St. John’s United Church of Christ Cemetery located at 1027 Church St., Fogelsville. Minister of Music David Roth thanked the Fogelsville Cemetery Association, Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 8282 of Breinigsville and Keller Funeral Home for their contributions to the event.
The ceremony included a Color Guard presentation by Boy Scout Troop 72 of Fogelsville, the Pledge of Allegiance and patriotic songs.
Pastor Denise Fry remembered those who died in service and offered prayers for peace.
Marilyn Roth read a letter written by a French child thanking veterans for their sacrifices.
The ceremony concluded with the placement of emblems on veterans’ graves and a final blessing.
American Gold Star Mother Deb Moyer expressed gratitude for the remembrance of her daughter.
Moyer’s stepdaughter, Ashly, graduated from Emmaus High School in 2003 and enlisted in the Army Reserve.
She attended the Military Police Academy at Fort Leonard Wood, Missouri, graduating in 2004.
She later served as a prison guard at Guantánamo Bay, Cuba.
After spending about a year back home, she returned to active duty and served in Bamberg, Germany, for approximately five months before being deployed to Iraq.
On March 3, 2007, she was killed when an roadside bomb (IED) detonated beneath the armored vehicle she was driving.
Three American soldiers died in the attack.
Sgt. Ashly Moyer was 21 years old when she gave her life in service to her country.
