NWL baseball team seeks consistency as playoffs loom
The only consistent part of the Northwestern Lehigh baseball team’s offense this season has been its inconsistency.
Hitters heat up for a game or two and then just as quickly, cool back down.
After scoring 25 runs in three games recently, the Tigers took the field against Lehighton and were shutout for the first time this season. As a team, the Tigers are hitting just .247 this season.
None of the players in the starting lineup had a hit against the Indians. Luke Marrazzo, who came into the game in the top of the sixth inning, singled with one out in the seventh for the only hit of the game for Northwestern.
The lack of offense ruined a well-pitched game by senior Griffin Unrath, who allowed just three hits, two walks and one run over seven innings.
Earlier in the week, Northwestern went extra innings to beat Jim Thorpe after allowing the Olympians to erase a 4-1 lead with a three-run bottom of the seventh. The Tigers got a two-run single by Devin Rex in the eighth inning for a 6-4 win.
Jim Thorpe made it exciting in the bottom of the eighth when it loaded the bases with one out against Cole Dynda. Pinch-hitter Mason Domski grounded a ball to second that was turned into a game-ending double play to preserve the win.
Dynda pitched all eight innings, striking out nine and finishing at exactly 100 pitches for the game.
Ethan Konyak, Dynda and Lucian Sterling all had two hits with Rex and Tanner Fronina both driving in two runs to pace Northwestern’s offense.
With a 10-5 overall record, Northwestern has wrapped up a spot in the District 11 playoffs.
The Tigers, enter this week at 9-5 in the Colonial League, are close to clinching a league playoff spot. They need wins in two of their final four games.
Northwestern has league games against Lehighton (7-7), Jim Thorpe (8-7), Palmerton (8-6), and Northern Lehigh (8-6) remaining.
The Tigers close out the regular season with a game against Blue Mountain (12-3) on May 4.
