STSD directors hear update on curriculum reviews

The Salisbury Township School District board of directors held a curriculum and technology meeting May 13 where they received student reports, a brief overview of the curriculum developed this year and a review of changes to student handbooks.

Salisbury Elementary School students Zachary Riccaboni and Paige Starsinic reported third and fourth grade students celebrated the end of Pennsylvania System of State Assessments with popcorn and a movie.

Recently the second grade class enjoyed a field trip to Quiet Valley Farm to learn about the history of a working farm.

On May 1, students from Salisbury joined students from across the area to participate in the Special Olympics held at the Whitehall-Coplay School District.

May 5 was field day for all SES students which took place at the Salisbury High School stadium. Students enjoyed a picnic lunch and had an opportunity to view the artwork presented at the school district art show.

Superintendent Lynn Fuini-Hetten gave an update on the curriculum reviews teachers and administrators have been working on throughout the school year. Elementary curriculum reviews were conducted for elementary specials including library, music, physical education and art kindergarten to fifth grade.

At the secondary level reviews were conducted in honors chemistry, honors physics, biology, photography and digital imaging. Three new electives will also be offered in English Language Arts. The former Life Smarts course will be split into two half-year courses – personal finance and career exploration and readiness.

As a district, the entire policy manual has been updated over the course of many months so changes to school handbooks were needed. Many of the changes are the same in all handbooks from elementary through high school including the Virtual Academy of Salisbury.

Fuini-Hetten gave a brief overview of changes in all student handbooks such as AI implementation and policy, the flag code and updates to nurse/health room suite in accordance with Centers for Disease Control and Prevention guidelines.

Additionally, changes to detentions and disciplinary procedures were made at the middle school level.

The next meeting of the curriculum and technology committee will be 7 p.m. Sept 16. All meetings of the school directors are held in the administration building, 1140 Salisbury Road, Allentown.
