Salisbury High School holds annual spring concert May 6

The annual spring concert took place May 6 in the Salisbury High School auditorium.

New to Salisbury Township School District, John Sigafoos replaced Rachel Reinecke after her retirement last year as music director.

“We’ve expanded our repertoire, learned new elements of musicality and crafted a quality performance,” Sigafoos told the audience.

The concert was a combined effort of band and chorus students, including a special senior performance. Sigafoos also shared he appreciated working with the students “and seeing them grow throughout the year.” While the band and chorus are small in numbers, Sigafoos told the audience that they are “growing.”

The band opened with “Spring” by Randall Standridge and followed it with Carol Brittin Chambers’ “Rhythmania.” But, it was the clever sounds of “The Pink Panther” with arrangement by Story that captivated the audience. The chorus joined the band for “Chorale No. 5” with arrangement by Feldstein/Clark.

After a short intermission, the band and chorus seniors were recognized. The 10 seniors performed “Over the Rainbow” with an arrangement by Story. The students told the audience that Judy Garland made this song famous and shared it is a song that is “sad, but hopeful.” It was noted this specific song was almost cut from “The Wizard of Oz” and it turned out to become one of the “best songs of all time.”

The seniors were told that while they may take varied paths after high school, “never forget that there is no place like home.”

Sigafoos introduced each senior and shared the students’ involvement in music and other extracurricular activities. He also shared students’ post secondary plans as well as honors and achievements earned. The audience cheered loudly for each senior.

Following the senior segment, the chorus performed “To Make You Feel My Love” with an arrangement by Shaw, “There Will Come Soft Rains” by Teasdale/Gray and “Pure Imagination” with an arrangement by Althouse.

At the end of the concert, Sigafoos told the students he was impressed with their efforts this year and looks forward to next year.

Guests enjoyed refreshments during the intermission and following the concert.
