LEHIGH VALLEY WEATHER

MORAVIAN ACADEMY By Jake Welton

Though Moravian’s campus is abuzz with birdcalls and blooming springtime buds, the Lions are unwinding and reflecting on their many achievements from this school year.

In early April, Moravian took steps to help students disconnect from the digital world and reconnect with one another. For a three-day experiment, students turned in their phones to the main office for the entire school day from 8 a.m. to 3:15 p.m. To quote Jennifer TumSuden, Moravian Academy’s Dean of Students, “Turning in your phone each morning might feel like we are taking something away from you. Our hope is actually to give something back: your attention, your engagement, your presence.”

In reflecting on his experience during the phone ban, Henry Zohn (‘26) said, “I think it really helped foster and strengthen relationships between peers. I felt so much more engaged with the people around me!” Laila Ali (‘26) said, “I definitely felt more focused in my classes, but at the same time I couldn’t contact my friends to see where they were and meet up after class.”

During the experiment, students were supplied with a variety of analog activities. In merely glancing across the quad, one could spot students jumping rope, playing hacky-sack or enjoying an ice cream from the Milk Truck. As the Lions kindle connections in the absence of screens, we strengthen the warp and weft of our tight-knit community.

Moravian’s dance team stormed Dyer Auditorium recently with its annual Red and Gold Recital. After an energetic performance full of splits, spins and sissonnes en pointe, the performers took a moment to sit down and reflect on their time with the dance team at Moravian. In reflecting on her first year as captain of the team, Maddie Yang (‘27) said it’s really easy to become overly critical of yourself when you’re surrounded by so many talented people. “But my dance journey at Moravian has taught me to embrace my own timeline and never limit what I think I am capable of. Next year, I even hope to choreograph my own solo.” Just as the Lions cheer on their peers as they perform, they also take the time to listen to the stories behind the polished product – the tender moments that bring our community closer together.

When walking through the hallways of Walter or up the Snyder spiral staircase, one could not utter the words “May 1” without a jolt of fear spindling down the spines of a nearby senior. With this date comes a decision that culminates what the senior class has worked for its whole Upper School career – where to attend college. To many, higher education is a crucial step in obtaining work in a certain field post-graduation – a notion Moravian is well aware of. Thus, for the last two weeks of school, seniors are to embark on their Post Term experiences – unique externship opportunities every member of the senior class embarks on, designed to give students a taste of the careers they hope to pursue. Curious? Let’s hear what adventures a few members of the Class of 2026 are embarking on for their Post Terms:

- Elena Koprowski - “I’m going to be shadowing a Lehigh Valley county commissioner, who also works as the assistant vice provost for a university in Manhattan.”

Elena will be attending McGill University next year, where she plans to major in political science and economics.

- Ivy Jennette - “I’m going to work with an intervention specialist at an elementary school in Allentown. I’m excited to get a broader feel for the modern learning environment.”

Ivy will be attending Temple University next year, where she plans to major in public health.

- Shiv Patel - “I’ll be shadowing a cardiologist at the Lehigh Valley Health Network. I’m excited to shadow surgeries and see how the medical field operates.”

Shiv will be attending New York University next year, where he plans to co-major in global health and applied psychology.

As we approach the final moments of the school year, the Lions remember to reconnect, to reflect, and to rejoice about the ever-electrifying future.
