Coplay: Saengerbund plans concerts

Coplay Saengerbund, 205 S. Fifth St., has scheduled its Friday night concerts — Video Daze May 8, Common Bond May 15, Uncle Smiley May 22 and Stereotype May 29. The gate will open 5 p.m., the kitchen opens 5:30 p.m., and the music will end 10 p.m.

The Saengerbund’s Wednesday acoustic concert lineup includes Sharon Pires May 13 and Larry Werner and Mandalyn Rayne May 27. Performances are 6-9 p.m.

St. Peter Roman Catholic Church, 4 S. Fifth St., is holding a Night at the Races May 16 in the social hall. Doors open 5:30 p.m., and races begin 7 p.m.

There is limited seating, and attendees must be 21 or older to be admitted. Tables of eight can be reserved.

Tickets include a voucher for two sandwiches, a bag of chips, coleslaw, baked goods and your choice of beer, wine, soda or water. Outside food is welcome, but BYOB is not permitted.

The Wednesday night summer concert series at Second and Chestnut streets features Tim Harakal 6-9 p.m. May 20. Bring a blanket or chair, and enjoy an evening of music with friends and neighbors.

Coplay Garden Club is in full swing. The next meeting is 7 p.m. May 28 in the social hall at St. John’s Lutheran Church, 18 S. Third St.

A May gardening tip: “Focus on planting warm-season staples like tomatoes, peppers and cucumbers by mid- to late-May (after frost).”

West Coplay Maennerchor, 3326 N. Ruch St., has a surf and turf raffle, offering a wide selection of beef, pork, seafood and grilling-related items, scheduled for 2-4 p.m. June 6. Doors open 1 p.m. Attendance is not required to win.

The Maennerchor is open daily. Its mission is “to give members a wholesome diversion from daily tasks, by means of music, sports and social activities.” The club was organized May 5, 1915, by German and Austrian immigrants.

Get ready! The Coplay Municipal Pool opens June 14. The pool is open noon-7 p.m. seven days a week.

The borough is hiring lifeguards and gate guards. Applications are available 8 a.m.-3:30 p.m. at the municipal office, 98 S. Fourth St.

New 25-gallon recycle bins with lids are in and available for purchase and pickup at the borough office.

Coplay Food Bank, located in the lower level of the municipal building, is open 8:30-10 a.m. the second Tuesday of every month. If unable to attend the scheduled Tuesday morning time frame, call Jodi at 610-262-0928 to make other arrangements.

The food bank needs coffee, spaghetti sauce and noodles, canned pasta, rice pouches and non-sweetened dry cereals. Monetary donations are always accepted.

Get in shape for the summer season. The Coplay aerobics classes meet 9:30 a.m. Tuesdays and Thursdays, 8:45 a.m. Saturdays and 7 p.m. Mondays and Wednesdays in the borough hall auditorium. There is a cost by donation.

Bring light dumbbells, a towel and a mat to enhance your workout.

Grass only can be dropped off at 1 Bridge St. Friday brush and branch pickup began April 3.

Call the borough office to schedule pickups of sofas, plastic-encased mattresses, chairs, dressers, etc. There is a limit of two per year at no charge.

Hometown Hero banner applications are available at the borough office. Honor your war heroes and first responders — police officers, firefighters and ambulance personnel — with a banner. Call the borough office for more information.

Coplay Social Hall, 165 Cherry St., and the pavilion are open for rentals for your special events.

Coplay American Legion Post 426 has a special mailbox in front of the Post at 134 S. Second St. Worn-out American flags can be deposited into the mailbox for the Post to properly destroy the flags.
