South Whitehall Township emergency crews recently responded to two separate incidents along Hamilton Boulevard, including a vehicle crash into a credit union building and a pickup truck fire.

The first incident occurred Sept. 15 when a driver lost control of a vehicle and crashed through an exterior wall on the west side of Lehigh Valley Educators Credit Union, 3720 Hamilton Blvd.

The driver was not believed to have suffered serious injuries but was transported by Cetronia Ambulance Corps to a hospital for evaluation.

Firefighters from the Cetronia, Greenawalds and Woodlawn fire departments responded and extricated the driver from the vehicle.

According to reports, the impact knocked an employee in an adjacent room from her chair. She was not injured.

Separately, firefighters were dispatched to a vehicle fire on eastbound Hamilton Boulevard near the 3900 block.

A four-door pickup truck was fully engulfed in flames when crews arrived. As firefighters battled the blaze, multiple popping sounds were heard after a firearm inside the truck became superheated and ammunition began cooking off.

Greenawalds Engine 11 arrived first and began an initial attack using water from the engine’s onboard tank. Firefighters soon determined a larger water supply was needed and stretched a 4-inch supply line several hundred feet to a hydrant at the corner of Lincoln Avenue and Hamilton Boulevard.

It took firefighters more than 20 minutes to bring the fire under control.
