Stiles: Whitehall resident takes first in bocce

Once again, Whitehall Township resident Bob Frey participated in the Charles J. Peneno Marco Island Bocce League in Florida. Frey and his teammates played in a two-day tournament March 20 and 21 at Mackle Park on Marco Island.

Frey and his team won their first game and advanced to the finals. They won their next two games, which secured a spot for them in the championship.

The Frey team was victorious, winning first place with a score of 12-2. Along with Frey, the team consists of Glenn Ahlquist of Staten Island, N.Y., and Carol and Bill Forrest of Wildwood Crest, N.J. Each team member received a gold medal. This same team won second place last year.

The league consists of 168 people on 42 teams, which are divided into seven divisions. They play two games a week for 10 weeks.

Frey also participated in the Sportfishing Club Sea Trout Spectacular with Fred Curtis, Ed McCarthy and Mike Smith March 11-16. During their two-day fishing timeframe, Frey’s team caught six sea trout, which totaled 95.25 inches in length. This was enough to win second place.

The competitors totaled 59 anglers on 24 boats.

Congratulations to Frey and his teams on their achievements!

Spring weather has finally arrived in Stiles! Remember the general rule for planting annual flowers in our area is to wait until at least May 15. This way, your flowers should not be threatened by any frost.
