Trojans extend win streak to five matches

The Parkland High School boys volleyball team has responded well from a loss in just its third Eastern Pennsylvania Conference match almost a month ago. Since that point, the Trojans have won five conference matches in a row, including last week’s win over Allen..

Parkland defeated the Canaries in straight sets last Wednesday, April 15, by scores of 25-17, 25-16 and 25-7. The next night, the Trojans downed Delaware Valley in nonconference action, by scores of 25-22, 25-15 and 25-15.

“The season is going well,” said Parkland head coach Scott Trumbauer. “We are seeing good progress in practice translating to matches and are competing when we face top teams. We are still working on remaining consistent in every match, but things are moving in the right direction.

“The guys have really focused on execution during EPC play lately. That focus has shown in the results. We’ve had matches of excellent play, but then have some issues remaining focused when closing out matches, they have learned a lot from the tournaments we attended this year and applied it to league play well.”

Trumbauer feels that playing in strong tournaments with many different state powerhouse teams, such as the Bobcat Invitational and Koller Classic have helped with the current win streak for the Trojans.

“Playing that level of competition is huge,” Trumbauer said. “It forces us to be sharp and shows us where we need to improve before the postseason. It’s also an opportunity to be in loud, hectic environments, which helps us learn what it takes to execute when it’s harder to focus or hear each other.”

In the victory over Del Val, Zeke Gordner tallied 12 digs, two aces, two digs and one block. Jude Ruisch finished with nine kills. Gabe Chase recorded 22 assists, four digs, one ace and one block. Owen Barnett contributed 21 digs.

“Zeke Gordner has taken the role of outside hitter really well despite only being a sophomore,” said Trumbauer. “Zamin Soonasra has really played well for us on the right side. Bear Jacobs has controlled the middle for us again this year. And Owen Barnett has provided a steady presence for us at libero. He has kept us on track in huge moments this season with his defense and serve-receiving abilities.”

Parkland improved to 9-2 overall and 7-1 in the conference.

Through games played Tuesday, Parkland was tied with Nazareth (10-2 overall, 8-1 EPC) for third place in the league standings behind Freedom (14-0; 9-0) and Emmaus (10-1, 9-1).
