Emmaus baseball beats Allen, falls to ACC
The Emmaus baseball team went 1-1 last week to stay at .500 early in the season.
The Hornets fell to Central Catholic in extra innings last Friday, 6-4, but came back to beat Allen 7-2 a day later.
Against Central on Tuesday, March 24, the Hornets trailed 4-0 after two innings but tied the game with a run in the fifth and three in the bottom of the seventh to force extra innings. The Vikings plated two runs in the ninth to pull out the win.
Drayce Schmidt paced the Emmaus offense, going 3-for-4 and scoring a run. Josh Diaz (2-for-5, RBI) and Robert Barnes (2-for-3, 2 RBI) each had a pair of hits in the game.
Ryan Hummell was tagged with the loss after allowing one earned run on three hits and three walks over 3.1 innings. Connor Horwath (one hit in 1.1 innings) and Jaden Betz allowed one earned run on four hits and five walks. Emmaus committed two errors in the game and four of Central’s runs were unearned.
A day later against Allen, Cole Moreau got the win after giving up one hit and two runs in 5.1 innings. The senior struck out 11 batters and walked four. Horwath pitched 1.1 innings, allowing two hits and no runs.
Tanner Karwacki (2-for-3, 2 RBI) and Moreau (2-for-4, 2 RBI) each had two hits for Emmaus. Diaz was 1-for-1 with a home run. The junior also walked twice, drove in two runs and scored twice against the Canaries.
Emmaus (2-2 overall; 2-1 East Penn Conference) trails Central Catholic (4-0; 4-0), Parkland (4-0; 4-0) and Whitehall (4-1; 3-1) in the EPC Lehigh Division. Pocono Mountain East (5-0, 4-0) in the Monroe Division is the only other unbeaten team in the EPC. Liberty (3-2, 3-1) leads Nazareth (2-1, 2-1) in the Northampton Division.
