McFetridge, Zephyrs look to finish out season strong
Whitehall’s Molly McFetridge plans to enjoy every moment of her last season on the diamond.
In some ways, it will be bittersweet.
“This season is very special to me being a senior,” gushed McFetridge. “I want to leave a great impact on the team and be a role model for the younger girls. This could be the last time I’m ever going to step foot on a softball field so I am trying to do my very best and put every game and practice on the line. It is also a little sad because it’s also the last time I’m ever going to be on the same field with best friends.”
McFetridge is the Zephyrs’ right fielder, and she is one of the main reasons the team was off to a good start. She got off to a .417 start with two doubles and three RBIs over the first few games of the season.
The Zephyrs allowed just three runs in their first five games. They have posted shutouts over Dieruff (10-0), Liberty (9-0), Hazleton (10-0), and Pine Grove (14-0), and most recently Allen (16-0) and Eastburg North (10-0) as well as a win over Parkland (6-3).
However, the team has lost three of its last four games as of early this week.
Still, over the years, head coach Jeff Vivian has appreciated McFetridge’s versatility and her consistent production. “
“Molly’s athleticism has been on full display this year,” emphasized Vivian earlier this season. “She was an outfielder her freshman and sophomore year. She moved to second base her junior year and is back in the outfield for us to solidify our right field spot.
“You cannot win many games at Whitehall without a strong right fielder. So we asked her to move there this year to help secure some wins. Offensively she is enjoying her best start. Has been productive in every game at the plate. You can tell she has become more comfortable with her approach offensively and that has translated well for her at the plate.”
McFetridge worked to make the most of her offseason.
“During preseason I made sure to show up to every practice and consistently work on improving,” stressed McFetridge. “To me, showing up in preseason is what really makes you better and puts you ahead of everyone else that doesn’t go. I didn’t focus on one specific thing but I made sure to get lots of reps in both hitting and fielding.”
In addition to softball, McFetridge excels in field hockey, and she will continue that career next year at Moravian University, where she will be studying biology on the pre-physician assistant track.
“I love sports and devote a lot of time to both of them,” stated McFetridge. “I am looking forward to attending Moravian next year where I can pursue my major and play field hockey as well.”
In the meantime, McFetridge is confident her team can make a meaningful postseason run.
