Fighting Hunger: Meals on Wheels helps community

At least once a year, I like to write on Meals on Wheels of the Greater Lehigh Valley. The organization does so much to alleviate food insecurity in both Lehigh and Northampton counties.

The information below is from its website. For more information on Meals on Wheels and to volunteer, visit mowglv.org or call 610-691-1030 7:30 a.m.-4 p.m. Mondays through Fridays.

“Welcome to Meals on Wheels, where our legacy is built on a foundation of compassion, community and dedicated service. For over 50 years, we have been passionately committed to serving seniors and adults with disabilities, fostering a sense of well-being and connection within our community. Meals on Wheels of the Greater Lehigh Valley is a private, nonprofit organization serving all of Lehigh and Northampton counties.

“At Meals on Wheels of the Greater Lehigh Valley, we provide homebound senior citizens and adults with disabilities with home-delivered meals, grocery shopping and other services. Most importantly, we provide them with the kindness and respect they deserve.

“Our mission is simple yet profound: to provide nutritious meals and foster social connection across the greater Lehigh Valley. We’ve become an integral part of the lives of over 2,000 seniors and adults with disabilities in the Lehigh Valley. From the age of 19 to the remarkable milestone of 106, our clients encompass a diverse range of individuals, each with unique needs and stories.

“To ensure our services reach those in various corners of our community, we’ve established eight convenient pickup locations for our dedicated volunteers. These locations serve as hubs of generosity, where volunteers gather to contribute to our shared mission.

“Our commitment to making a difference is reflected in the extensive reach of our operations. With a network of 89 daily delivery routes, we strive to bridge gaps and provide essential nourishment directly to the doorsteps of those we serve. Each route represents a story, a connection and a lifeline to those who rely on our services.”

Karen Haberern has volunteered with Meals on Wheels since 2012 and has more than 1,600 hours of volunteer time. She creates the meal delivery route sheets for both Lehigh and Northampton counties.

She also volunteers with Whitehall-Coplay Hunger Initiative’s food distributions and is the WCHI free community meals program chair. These free meals are offered twice a month to low-income Whitehall-Coplay School District residents. For more information, call Karen at 610-730-3184.

“Having been a teacher, I have always had a desire to continue to make a positive impact on the community,” Karen said. “Volunteering for both Meals on Wheels and WCHI has fulfilled this need.”

Have a super fantastic week!
