Parkland’s spring musical was a success

Last year, Parkland High School Theatre was proud to present an incredible production of Les Miserablés: A heartbreaking and powerful tale that left viewers emotional.

While this sold out show was regarded as a favorite by regular viewers of PHS musicals, this year, the theatre department opted for a change of pace with a satirical, comedic musical that was sure to entertain a crowd: “How to Succeed in Business Without Really Trying.”

Often abbreviated to “How to Succeed or H2$,” this musical follows the story of J. Pierrepont Finch, portrayed by Jordan Silver, who uses a handbook to find success in the corporate world.

Rather than using hard work, Finch follows the handbook’s guide to finding success by using charm, wit, and a bit of scheming.

Finch finds his journey at the World Wide Wicket company, where Finch finds a love interest in Rosemary, portrayed by Madelynn Wascura, who dreams of a suburban life with Finch.

He also meets Bud Frump played by Gavin Sachse, the entitled nephew of company’s president J.B. Biggley portrayed by Luke Hauck, who is intimidated by Finch’s quick rise to success.

Along the way, Finch meets many more, including the incredibly attractive and adored Hedy Larue played by Ainsley Quay, the sharp, savvy Smitty portrayed by Angelina Zaiter, and Biggley’s secretary, Miss Jones played by Lila Furst.

As he progresses through his journey, Finch continues advancing throughout the corporate world and finding his success.

Alongside being a comical and entertaining musical, this show’s satirical commentary on the 1960s workplace culture through the mode of song has made it a favorite among viewers.

From a frantic rush to find caffeine in “Coffee Break” to the commentary on workplace sexism in “A Secretary is Not A Toy,” this musical’s songs are both lightheartedly entertaining and meaningful.

Most notably, “The Company Way” is a satirical commentary about conforming to corporate culture to guarantee a job rather than striving for growth is a favorite among viewers, and the most famous song from this musical. Parkland High School’s incredible vocalists brought these numbers to life, with both the lead cast and ensemble’s incredible performance.

Parkland High School’s production of “How to Succeed” has received rave reviews from viewers both young and old.

The incredible song and dance paired with a hilarious script have made this year’s musical truly stand out among many of Parkland High School’s incredible theater productions.
