Pates riding win streak in baseball

It may have been a slow start to the season for Freedom’s baseball team, but the Patriots have found their groove.

After an 0-4 start, Freedom has won six straight games heading into the week to put them right in the mix of the East Penn Conference.

“We have some returning players, but the beginning of the season started off slow with injuries as well as some new faces playing Varsity baseball for the first time,” said head coach John Bisco. “That is going to come with challenges. The kids have really worked hard to continue grinding no matter the outcome of the games.”

After giving up over 10 runs a game in their first four contests, Freedom has only surrendered 20 runs in their last six with wins over Easton (twice), Central Catholic, East Stroudsburg North, Bethlehem Catholic and Dieruff.

That stretch may have been a softer part of the schedule, but things will heat up this week with the likes of Northampton (6-3) and Liberty (6-4) on tap, along with Pleasant Valley (3-7).

Bisco is just focusing on daily improvement for his group despite their hot streak.

“We are just taking the season one game at a time,” he said. “The senior leadership has been great and we are getting impactful performances from the underclassmen as well. It’s a good group of kids, but there’s a lot of season left.”

Liberty continues to climb up the ladder, as they have won three of their last four games, with the only blip coming in a 4-2 loss to Williamsport over the weekend.

They have a tough week ahead with Nazareth (7-3), Freedom and a suprising Allen (9-3) squad on tap.

Bethlehem Catholic (2-8) hasn’t been able to keep teams from scoring, as the Hawks lost to Freedom last week 14-2 and Northampton 16-5.

They did pick up an 8-5 win over East Stroudsburg South last Monday.

Beca has Easton, Emmaus (5-4) and Wyoming Seminary this week.
