SHS baseball closes in on playoff berth

The Easter holiday gave the Salisbury baseball team a little time off with just one game over the past week.

The Falcons didn’t relax in that game and picked up a needed win to bounce back after losing two of their three previous games.

Salisbury is on the verge of clinching a district playoff spot, is tied for the top spot in the Colonial League South Division and is closing in on clinching a spot in the league playoffs.

In an 8-4 win against Palmerton, Salisbury took advantage of six Blue Bombers errors to score six unearned runs. Seven different players combined for 10 hits in the game with Josh Holler, Garrett Leiner and Michael Stauffer all collecting two hits.

The big blow came from Markus Jones, who stepped to the plate with the bases full in the bottom of the third inning and delivered a double to drive in all three runners as part of a six-run inning. Leiner and Stauffer both had two RBI in the game.

On the mound, Owen Fogel started and went six innings, striking out five batters. Josiah Kuhns pitched the seventh for Salisbury.

Among players with at least 40 plate appearances, Austin Spisszak leads the team with a .415 average and is followed by Stauffer (.400) and Caleb Gonzalez (.400) with Leiner and Nate Nunez both batting .350 this season. Dom Gracia is batting .325 and Jones, a sophomore, is hitting .293 for Salisbury. The race for RBI leader is tight with Stauffer (12), Nunez (11), Fogel (10), Spisszak (10), and Jones and Gracia both at nine. Fogel has the only two home runs hit by the team this season.

Fogel leads the team’s starters with a 1.86 ERA in 26 2/3 innings of work. Spisszak has a 3.03 ERA in 30 innings of work. Kuhns has thrown just nine innings but has compiled a 0.78 ERA with 13 strikeouts.

Over the next week, Salisbury (8-3 Colonial, 9-3 overall) sees their schedule turn very busy with four games, all on the road.

The Falcons play Notre Dame of Green Pond (6-6, 6-6), Wilson (5-7, 6-7) and then is at Saucon Valley (9-2, 9-2) for a doubleheader with one of the games being a makeup game from earlier in the season.
