Former school resource officer pleads guilty

Costas Alestas, a former Bethlehem Police officer and school resource officer at East Hills MS, has pleaded guilty to charges of an inappropriate relationship with a female student at that school.

The 14-year-old victim said she had been in ongoing communication with Alestes at the school and over his personal phone. When the victim’s mother became aware of this, Alestas allegedly began using a second phone.

The victim alleged the relationship was sexual in nature and took place in the school and in Alestas’ vehicle parked outside. One incident occurred during a school dance while Alestas was in uniform, she said.

A video shot from Alestas’ phone depicted an “upskirt” view of a second victim, taken unawares.

At the time, Alestas, now 44, was an employed officer with the BPD who was removed from the school and placed on administrative leave pending investigation.

Northampton County District Attorney Stephen G. Baratta said in a statement Alestas pleaded guilty April 23 to charges of involuntary deviate sexual intercourse and invasion of privacy. Together, he may serve as long as 21 years in prison and be listed under Megan’s Law as a sexual offender for the rest of his life. Sentencing is scheduled for July 18.
