Catty softball team tops Minersville

Briana Deschaine had a three-run double to highlight a six-run fifth inning and lifted Catasauqua to a 6-2 victory over Minersville in an opening-round PIAA District 11 Class 2A softball playoff game at Patriot’s Park in Allentown Tuesday evening.

The Rough Riders (11-10) will meet top-seeded Williams Valley at Pine Grove in the next round on Thursday at 4:30 p.m. Last season, the Roughies beat Schuylkill Haven, 4-1, in the opening round before they lost to Northern Lehigh, 5-3, in the next round.

Delaney Troxell went the distance for the Roughies, as she allowed two runs (zero earned), on four hits, while striking out five and walking one. Troxell also had two hits and an RBI.

Makayla Bird also had two hits for the Roughies, who collected nine hits overall. Jordan Soltis had a hit and two RBIs. Sophia Becker, Alexis Richie, and Delanie Popa also each had a hit for Catty.

Troxell wasn’t shocked by the final outcome.

“We were coming into the game with a lot of confidence,” said Troxell. “I saw [Tuesday’s] game as just another game. I had the confidence in my team that we were going to play well and pull out another win.

“We don’t know much about Williams Valley, but we do know if we play our 1110 percent, we will come out on top.”
