‘Green’ May Day celebration set for May 18

“It’s May! It’s May! That gorgeous holiday,” Julie Andrews sang as Queen Guinevere in “Camelot.” Bethlehem may not quite be King Arthur’s Court, but The Chivalrous Crickets are putting the merry in the month of May with their inaugural celebration of the May Day holiday in the Christmas City.

“The Company Dressed in Green: A May Day Celebration with The Chivalrous Crickets” is slated to bring swashbuckling fun to the Charles A. Brown Ice House May 18.

Doors open at 3:30 p.m. for lobby activities including May Bush ribbon tying, head wreath making, face painting and photo op in the “Greenwood,” with the show running 4 to 6 p.m.

“This is our inaugural May Day event and we’re very excited to share some of the incredibly rich history this holiday offers,” said Bethlehem native Fiona Gillespie, co-founder and manager of The Chivalrous Crickets.

“Our version explores Celtic traditions, but May Day was – and is still in some places – observed by the majority of northern-hemisphere cultures going far back in time as one of the most important seasonal celebrations. Today that has been mostly lost in America,” Gillespie said.

“The approach of summer, already such a buoyant time, perhaps doesn’t seem to beg the same need for a holiday as the darkness of winter does. But the chance to celebrate and honor the season in community, and through the folk art created by people across the threads of time, connects our attention to the natural world at this beautiful time of year in a special way. We hope this event transports people beyond their everyday lives to a place with a little bit more magic.”

The Chivalrous Crickets combine ancient and newly-created customs to create a rollicking May Day – aka Beltane – experience for the whole family. Centered around a concert of spring-associated folk music, expect sing-along May Day carols, children’s games, a lottery to crown the May queen and king, a historic short Robin Hood play, poetry, head wreath making, refreshments and May Pole Dance. Wear your ribbons and favorite festive spring attire, and join the band in the magical Greenwood for song, dance, ritual and play.

The Chivalrous Crickets, whose repertoire shines with boldly re-imagined folk and Baroque standards, alongside original songs with traditional influence, is a genre-crossing band exploring the roots, branches, and crossroads of Celtic, English and American folk music with Early Music.

The band is partially based in Bethlehem. It’s comprised of Fiona Gillespie, vocals, bodhran, Irish whistle; Genevieve King, fiddle, vocals; Paul Morton, guitar, banjo, lute, vocals; Ben Matus, small pipes, German pipes, tenor whistle, recorder; Bradley King, vocals, cello, bass; and Spiff Wiegand, accordion, vocals, percussion, harmonica, erhu, jaw harp.

Ticket holders receive 20 percent off at Donegal Square on May 18 and May 19. The audience is encouraged to join The Chivalrous Crickets at The Red Stag Pub after the event for dinner and a drink. The bar is featuring a cocktail created for May Day called “The Beltane.”
