Emmaus Veterans Honor Guard to pay respects to veterans May 26

Lower Lehigh AARP will meet noon May 2 in the lower level of Macungie Memorial Hall. Tickets for the June 6 picnic will be available. For more information, contact Dot at 610-967-3284.

The Emmaus Historical Society and Museum, 218 Main St., is closed for renovations. Call the office at 610-966-6591 to schedule a time to drop off any memorabilia.

The historical society’s next program and membership meeting will be 7 p.m. May 15 at St. John’s Lutheran Church parish hall, 501 Chestnut St. Bill Barto will present the program “Kids’ TV Shows We Watched on Channels 3, 6 and 10 in the 1950s.” Programs are free and members and nonmembers are welcome to attend.

Support the Emmaus Historical Society at Yergey’s noon to 9 p.m. June 15. This is a matching tip event.

The historical society’s next bus trip is to see “Daniel” at Sight & Sound Theatres Aug. 22 with reservations due June 30. Call Nancy at 610-967-5715 for more information and to register.

Emmaus Borough offices will close May 27 in observance of Memorial Day.

The Emmaus Farmers Market will commence its regular season on opening day May 5. The market will have 34 different vendors. From May through November, the market will open 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. every Sunday in the Emmaus Triangle. Come and support local farms and vendors while enjoying fresh produce, meats, dairy, beverages, baked goods and live music.

The Emmaus Public Library will celebrate Star Wars Day May 4 with a build your own Spaceship activity. Star Wars fans of all ages will have the opportunity to re-purpose cardboard and other recycled materials to construct a unique spaceship. Parents/caregivers must assist any young Jedi from preschool through second grade. Register in advance by emailing eplkids@cliu.org, calling 610-965-9284 or visiting the front desk.

The library will host a spouse coffee talk 10:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. May 9. Anyone caring for a spouse with dementia is invited to this event. Attendees will enjoy a light brunch while socializing with other adults experiencing the same challenges with their own spouses. Come and learn about the history of Lehigh County 6-7 p.m. May 13 at the Emmaus Public Library. A representative from the Lehigh County Historical Society will present extensive history about Lehigh County through historical images, agricultural and industrial backgrounds and the impact on the country’s formation. All adults should RSVP by emailing eplcollection@cliu.org, calling the above number or consulting the front desk.

Margie Kavchok will lead a pen and ink drawing class 6-7:30 p.m. May 20. All adults 18 and older will discover how to use pen and ink to bring their artistic ideas to life. The library will supply all materials for the first 10 people who sign up.

The daytime book club will gather 2-3 p.m. May 7 to discuss John Berendt’s “Midnight in the Garden of Good and Evil.” Some copies may remain to borrow when you sign up. In June, this group will analyze “Lady Tan’s Circle of Women” by Lisa See.

The evening book club will analyze “You’ll Never Believe What Happened to Lacey” by Amber Ruffin and Lacey Lamar. The club will take a summer hiatus, but return in the fall with more incredible novels. Make sure to sign up in September for the first meeting in October.

The library will open noon May 10 to allow for the volunteer appreciation event in the morning. It will close May 25 and 27 in observance of Memorial Day. The library is always closed Sundays.

Emmaus will mark Memorial Day weekend this year with a variety of activities. The Emmaus Veterans Honor Guard will pay their respects to veterans in all six borough cemeteries May 26. The Honor Guard will visit the Calvary, Old Moravian, Moravian, Lutheran Reformed, Northwood and Evangelical cemeteries, reading a short prayer, holding a rifle salute and playing taps at each location. The event will begin 8 a.m. at Calvary cemetery.

The Memorial Day Parade will begin 9:30 a.m. May 27.

The 2024 Emmaus Summer Entertainment Series will also kick off over Memorial Day weekend, with country band SteelCreek performing 6-8 p.m. May 26 at Emmaus Community Park. All these summer concerts are free for everyone, whether you live in Emmaus or not.

The Emmaus Arts Commission is currently running its Gnome Sweet Gnome Auction: 80s Edition. This auction features 80s-themed gnomes created by local artists. This annual fundraiser fuels the commission’s efforts to provide free community art engagement opportunities. As summer rapidly approaches, consider purchasing your 2024 season pass for the Emmaus Community Pool. You may purchase your pass at several presale dates at borough hall, 28 S. Fourth St., Emmaus.
