Baseball and softball teams win games

Catasauqua’s baseball team gained its first victory of the season Monday afternoon when they downed Bangor, 4-1.

The Rough Riders’ softball team also was on the winning side Monday, as they notched a 7-4 victory over the Slaters.

For the baseball team, John Pushkar had a solid day on the mound, as he struck out six and scattered four hits over 6.2 innings. Reece Lopez recorded the final out to secure the victory.

Lopez, Aureal Gonzalez, Ray Estecumber, and Dave Caril each drove in a run for the Rough Riders (1-8), who made the most of their four hits and five walks.

Head coach Steve Bradley was pleased with his team’s overall effort.

“We played a super game in the field all seven innings,” beamed Bradley. “The outfield was outstanding making some big plays that saved some extra bases, Bryce Emery in right, Dave Carl in center and Lynkan Moore in left. We were patient at the plate and drew some key walks with bases loaded. Reece Lopez played a great game at short and has been solid all season there.”

For the softball team, Delaney Troxell struck out 11 batters, and Makayla Bird drove in four runs on a pair of hits.

Sophia Becker added two hits for the Roughies, who evened their record at 4-4.

Catty sits in fifth in the District 11 2A standings behind Schuylkill Haven (7-2), Williams Valley (6-2), Northern Lehigh (3-2) and Minersville (5-5).

In a recent game against Salisbury, Troxell struck out 17 batters and moved above the 500 strikeout mark for her career. See photo on the front page.

Last week’s information and headline in the Catasauqua Press, which stated Troxell pitched a no-hitter, was incorrect as Salisbury actually had four hits in the game, which was a 6-0 win for CHS.

Looking ahead, baseball will travel to Notre Dame Wednesday and host Palisades Friday, while softball will travel to Notre Dame Wednesday and host Palisades at Patriots’ Park Saturday afternoon.
