ALLEN: “The Wiz”

“The Wiz” eases on down the yellow brick road to Oz, 7 p.m. April 18, 19, 20; 2 p.m. April 21, John F. McHugh Auditorium, William Allen High School, 106 N. 17th St., Allentown.

Director-Producer John T. Sechler is assisted by Co-Director-Choreographer Dawn Blanco, Music Director Brandon Remp, Technical Director Marc Hissam, Costume Designer Karen Comegys and Conductor Eric Moser.

Music is by Charlie Smalls, Timothy Graphenreed, Harold Wheeler, George Faison and Luther Vandross, lyrics are by Charlie Smalls, Zachary Walzer and Luther Vandross, and the book is by William F. Brown.

The musical is a retelling of L. Frank Baum’s 1900 children’s novel “The Wonderful Wizard of Oz” with a focus on contemporary African-American culture.

The 1975 original Broadway production won seven Tony Awards out of eight Tony nominations.

There were two Broadway revivals, one in 1984 and again in 2024.

The 1978 film of the same title starring Diana Ross and directed by Sidney Lumet was nominated for four Academy Awards.

Songs include “Home,” “Ease on Down the Road,” “Everybody Rejoice-A Brand New Day,” “Believe in Yourself,” “Slide Some Oil to Me” and “Mean Ole Lion.”
