LEHIGH VALLEY WEATHER

Salisbury softball faces busy schedule

The Salisbury softball schedule really should have been done in pencil because five games, not including a scrimmage game early in May, have been postponed and rescheduled. The result is that the Lady Falcons are going to have some games backing up on them and things will get very busy at some point in the schedule.

Salisbury’s game at Saucon Valley was postponed on March 20 and has no make-up date yet, while the March 28 game at Bangor will now be on April 10. To fit in a make-up game with Wilson this Saturday, the game against Central Catholic has been postponed and a new date has yet to be announced. And finally, the home game against Catasauqua on Monday will now be played Tuesday at Patriot’s Park in Allentown.

The only game that was able to be played in the past week was against Northern Lehigh and the Bulldogs downed Salisbury 15-5 in that one.

After taking a 2-0 lead in the top of the first, Northern Lehigh (1-2 Colonial, 2-2 overall) was able to get to pitcher Beth Carney for eight runs in the second, which uncharacteristically ended the day for the senior pitcher. Freshman Jenna Swoyer came on in relief and allowed two earned runs over three innings.

Salisbury (0-2, 1-2) put two runs on the board in the bottom of the third. Ava Grube and Carney led off the inning with singles before Grube was thrown out on a double steal with Carney taking second. Riley Knecht followed with an infield single to move Carney to third and one out later, Swoyer singled to drive in both runners. Bailey Neitz lined a ball to right that was misplayed into a two-base error, but Northern Lehigh was able to get out of the inning without any further damage.

Even though they were down 15-2, Salisbury was not done. Amelia Swoyer walked to lead off the bottom of the fourth and Maddie Peifer and Grube followed with singles to load the bases. One out later, Knecht grounded out to second, but drove in a run to make it 15-3. Freshman Taylor Wagner lined a single to left that brought home Grube and Peifer to make it 15-5.

The game ended after five innings because of the 10-run rule.

If the weather cooperates, Salisbury will host Southern Lehigh (1-1, 1-3) today before playing at Palmerton (2-0, 3-0) on Friday and then at Wilson (2-0, 2-0) on Saturday. The Falcons have back-to-back games on Tuesday and Wednesday when they play Catasauqua (0-3, 1-3) at Patriot’s Park and then take a trip to Bangor (0-2, 0-2).
