LEHIGH VALLEY WEATHER

Nazareth ends NWL win streak

All good things must come to an end.

The Northwestern Lehigh softball team’s win streak was stopped at five recently when it lost a nonleague game to Nazareth, falling 5-4. Because of the recent spat of miserable weather, the Tigers have been unable to get back on the field since the loss and are hoping for some sunshine to get them back outdoors.

Things got off to a tough start against the Blue Eagles as the Tigers allowed Nazareth to jump out to a 5-0 lead through three innings. Alina Weaver and Taylor Friel both drove in two runs early to jump start Nazareth (2-1 EPC, 3-1 overall).

In the bottom of the sixth, Northwestern Lehigh (3-0 Colonial, 5-1 overall) got to starter Kylie Grover and chased her from the game. The Tigers offense greeted reliever Avery Kauffman rudely it put up four runs in the inning.

The scoring started with sophomore Ella Bressi grounding a single to right. With the benefit of two passed balls, Bressi wound up on third and Rylee McGinley walked. A sacrifice bunt by Sage Toman brought home Bressi and McGinley was able to make it all the way around to third on the play.

Izzy Akelaitis made it a 5-2 game when she lined a single to right to drive in McGinley and end the day for Grover. Kauffman came on and walked Abby Dunstan. With two runners on, Emma Freeman lined a ball over the head of Natalie Chloros to drive in both runners with Freeman winding up on third base with just one out and Nazareth’s lead down to 5-4.

Looking to tie the game, Lizzy Diehl dropped a sacrifice bunt that went right back to Kauffman who was able to hold Freeman at third, but Diehl reached safely at first. Kauffman then walked Shelby Mitman to load the bases before she recorded a strike out and got a ground ball to end the threat. Kauffman was able to put Northwestern down in order in the bottom of the seventh.

Northwestern returns to their league schedule this week with games scheduled against Catasauqua (0-3, 1-3), Palmerton (2-0, 3-0), and Bangor (0-2, 0-2).
