FREEDOM: “42nd Street”

“42nd Street” tap dances across the stage, 7 p.m. April 12, 13; 1 p.m. April 13, 14, auditorium, Freedom High School, 3149 Chester Avenue, Bethlehem.

Director Justin Amann is aided by Assistant Director Natalie Parker, Choreographer Vanessa Ruggiero, Music Director Denise Parker, Prop Mistress and Costumer Priscilla Salazar, Pit Director Michael Moran and Stage Manager Leah Hann.

Young Peggy Sawyer, “the best tapper from Allentown, Pa.,” lands a role in the chorus of a musical being produced in New York City circa 1933. The dancers are told that at $4.40 per seat, the audience will demand some spectacular dancing.

With music by Harry Warren, lyrics by Al Dubin and Johnny Mercer and book by Michael Stewart and Mark Bramble, the musical is based on the 1932 novel by Bradford Ropes, as well as the 1933 Hollywood film adaptation screenplay of the same title by Rian James, James Seymour and Whitney Bolton.

The original 1980 Broadway production was nominated for eight 1981 Tony Awards, receiving two Tonys.

The 2001 Broadway revival scored two Tonys out of nine Tony Award nominations.

Songs include “Audition,” “You’re Getting to be a Habit With Me,” “Getting Out of Town,” “Dames,” “We’re In the Money,” “Lullaby of Broadway” and “42nd Street.”
