Former EHS students launch Albert J. Neumeyer Project

The legacy of a great teacher resides in his students. In the case of Albert J. Neumeyer, his profound influence is inspiring the creation of a memorial in his honor.

Neumeyer’s former students Pamela Marino Weiss, Kathy Whitney and Kathy Nowack Worm, with the full support of Neumeyer’s widow Shirlee, are spearheading the Albert J. Neumeyer Project. They are working to raise $25,000 for the purchase of a commemorative plaque to be displayed at the entrance of the Emmaus High School auditorium. The money will also go toward establishing a scholarship in his name to be awarded annually to an outstanding senior performing arts student.

As Whitney states in her synopsis of Neumeyer’s accomplishments, “The depth and breadth of today’s East Penn music program, ... is a direct result of the firm foundation built so many years ago by Albert. J. Neumeyer.”

His accomplishments were many and varied. A talented vocalist, Neumeyer performed in local musicals and as a featured soloist with the Bach Choir of Bethlehem and a Lehigh Valley opera production.

In his role of adjunct professor at Lehigh University, he directed Lehigh’s Marching 97 and Symphonic bands for 25 years.

The East Penn School District benefitted substantially from Neumeyer’s dedication and creativity. He expanded the instrumental music program (concert, marching and jazz bands) and added courses in musical theater, music theory and acting. The list of his contributions to music education is extensive. More importantly, these classes served as a springboard for Neumeyer’s most significant contribution: enhancing his students’ personal growth.

According to former EHS band member and musical theater participant Worm, “He taught us ‘excellence’ before it was a buzz word ... You had to earn your accolades from Al, and when you did, it was amazing.”

Whitney, who enrolled in EHS as a junior, found Neumeyer supportive during a difficult transition. “Al was really, really kind to the quiet ones,” Whitney said.

The testimonials from Neumeyer’s students, which may be accessed online at albertjneumeyer.com, clearly demonstrate this man strove to bring out the best in every person he touched.
