Breakfast time

Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary Roman Catholic Church, Northampton, celebrated the second Sunday of Lent Feb. 25 with a successful breakfast.

Parishioners and other Mass attendees streamed in after the Sunday service to enjoy a hearty meal in the social hall of the church, 2181 Washington Ave.

The menu included French toast; pancakes; scrambled eggs; hash browns; a choice of sausage, bacon or ham; omelets; toast; and juice, coffee or tea. The diverse menu choices with generous portions ensured no one left hungry.

Maria Williams, of Northampton, looked forward to an excellent breakfast as she purchased tickets for her family from church volunteer Nikki Kotoris. Volunteer Joy Nicosia, of Northampton, also sold tickets for the breakfast.

The Harhart and Spengler families, of Northampton, met to enjoy a breakfast together. There was fun conversation about numerous topics and re-connecting for the families, who were clearly enjoying themselves.

Jane Spengler, breakfast director, was delighted with the volunteers’ teamwork to make the event a success. Spengler gave credit to all the volunteers who worked the event.

The Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary parish has a rich history that augmented the life of central and eastern European immigrants around the turn of the 20th century. Immigrants stimulated the development of the cement industry and other businesses that contributed to the growth of the area.

The church hosts a number of events during the year. It is planning an event titled Encounter the Shroud of Turin, Up-Close and Personal, scheduled for March 9 and 10. There will be a presentation by international expert Russ Breault and a life-size museum-quality replica of the shroud. It is a freewill offering event. Visit shroudencounter.com for information.
