Falcons win four straight

The Salisbury boys basketball team seems to be getting hot at the right time.

With wins over Northern Lehigh and Catasauqua this week, Salisbury won four straight as the season winds down. Bangor and Salisbury are tied for the final two playoff spots in the Colonial League with 9-5 league records and Wilson is just one game behind both teams at 8-6. Meanwhile, the wins have guaranteed Salisbury a spot in districts.

Against Catty (6-8 Colonial, 7-11 overall), Bryan Gonzalez led Salisbury with 15 points, including hitting a trio of three-pointers to lead all scorers. Salisbury led at the end of each quarter after taking a 16-5 lead at the end of the first quarter. Gonzalez scored seven of his points in the final quarter to help hold off a comeback attempt by the Rough Riders.

Northern Lehigh (0-15, 2-18) fell to the Falcons as Salisbury used the longball, sinking 11 three-pointers in the game. Jake Zellin led the barrage with four and Gonzalez hit on three from outside the arc as Zellin scored 23 and Gonzalez had 19 in the 66-46 win over the Bulldogs.

Salisbury led 24-21 at halftime, but broke the game open with a 27-point third quarter to take a 51-34 lead. That quarter alone consisted of six three-pointers.

Salisbury has just three regular season games remaining and two of them especially, present tough challenges. First up is Northwestern (9-4, 11-6), followed by a trip to Palmerton (10-3, 10-7). The Falcons lost to both Palmerton and Northwestern back in December and will look to even those series this week. The finale is at home against Southern Lehigh (6-7, 7-11) next Tuesday.

The game against Northern Lehigh is especially noteworthy since the Tigers are just one half game ahead of Salisbury in the league standings.
