BC girls fall to Rovers

Bethlehem Catholic’s girls basketball team broke even in its series with Easton when the Golden Hawks fell to the Red Rovers, 47-35, on Feb. 5 at Easton Area Middle School.

Becahi went up, 18-12, early in the second quarter after Cici Hernandez’s 3-pointer, only to see its lead evaporate quickly as the Rovers went on a 14-0 run.

“We told the girls the game’s not over,” said Becahi coach Arnold Allyene, regarding their talk at halftime. “We have a lot of basketball left, and kudos to [Easton]. They were able to go on another run, and we couldn’t dig ourselves back out of it.”

The Hawks slowed things down and did come back in the third quarter, however, outscoring the Rovers, 10-3.

Akasha Santos scored off an offensive rebound, Hernandez had a floater, and Aliyah Brame scored right after a Beca timeout.

Mekhyla Britt intercepted a pass near Easton’s basket, and Hernandez scored again. Easton turned over the ball soon afterward, and Hernandez sank two free throws to end the quarter.

Momentum shifted back to the Red Rovers after their 10-0 run to start the fourth quarter.

In the meantime, Beca was unable to get multiple shots to fall while turning the ball over on consecutive miscommunications.

Daviana Jones came off the bench and drained a triple for the Hawks, but time was running out on a Red Rover lead too great to overcome.

“I’m proud of the girls, but we learned a lesson,” Allyene said. “We won the first one at our house, and they won this one here, but we know what we need to do. Defensively, I’ve got to make a couple adjustments and be able to fix it, but we’re gonna be OK. Credit to Easton. They played a good game, but we’ll do better next time, for sure.”
