Coplay fire, police departments share updates with council

Coplay Borough police Chief Ryan Emerich and fire Chief Joseph Britt detailed general proceedings and information for their respective departments at the Coplay Borough Council workshop meeting Feb. 6. Discussions about grants awarded and pending approvals for the next meeting followed.

Emerich announced calls to the police department were down to 2,677 from 2,773 in 2023. He reminded council, however, that less calls do not mean less crime is occurring. Rather, staff shortages were the root of the problem for the department last year, he said.

This year, the department is looking at hiring new cadets and is offering four free training classes to the team, reportedly saving the borough a few thousand dollars.

Britt announced the fire department was awarded $15,200 through an Office of the State Fire Commissioner grant, which will be used to fix equipment on one of its trucks. The department was also approved for Community Development Block Grant Program funds to purchase and upfit a fire interceptor vehicle.

The total amount of grant money awarded was $59,000, with only $57,000 going toward these expenses. The awarded grant money could reportedly help save Coplay residents from an increase in taxes.

Coplay Mayor Steve Burker shared his approval and appreciation for Emerich, Britt and their departments’ services. Council members will vote to approve or deny these expenditures at the Feb. 13 general meeting.

Council will also be looking to approve the request of a $500 donation to the Ironton Rail Trail. Council will also be looking to approve the dates for craft fairs planned for March 3 and July 27, as well as the fire department’s request to use Saylor Park for the annual Easter egg hunt noon March 23.

Council will meet 7 p.m. Feb. 13 for the monthly general meeting at the municipal building, 98 S. Fourth St.
