Firefighters practice ‘Mayday’ call

PRESS PHOTO BY JIM MARSH Western Salisbury Volunteer Fire Company firefighters practice techniques and protocols involved in search and rescue operations to find potential trapped victims in a burning structure April 29 at their weekly Monday drill night. On a hot evening in full turnout gear, and with heavy air tanks on their backs, the firefighters entered the dark interior of the Emmaus Fire Department's training structure, along Kline's Lane, Emmaus, to search for a simulated “victim” throughout the structure. To make the training more realistic, a smoke machine inside generated nontoxic smoke as firefighters crawled on hands and knees to locate a hose-pack placed as a simulated “victim.” The firefighters also simulated a Rapid Intervention Team exercise to locate and rescue a simulated “firefighter-down” after a radioed “Mayday” call.
