Robert K. Young, Esquire

Robert K. Young, 92, of Macungie, died Jan. 25, 2024. He was the husband of Carolyn E. (Stephen) Young for 72 years.

He was a graduate of Westtown Friends School, Haverford College and University of Pennsylvania Law School. He began his practice of law in 1956 and was joined by his son, Donald, in 1977. He was a president of the Lehigh County Bar Association in 1981, solicitor at varying times for the Borough of Macungie, Upper Milford Township, Lehigh Career & Technical Institute and Lehigh Carbon Community College.

He was nominated by Gov. Dick Thornburgh to fill a vacancy on the Lehigh County Bench in 1984 and was then elected to a full 10-year term in 1985 where although he served in all divisions, particularly enjoyed being the administrative judge of the Orphans’ Court through his term. He retired in 1995.

Throughout his career he served on many community committees, including chair of Lehigh County Guardianship Support Agency, chair of East Penn Industrial Development Committee, East Penn School Board, the Boy Scouts as a Scoutmaster; member of the Minsi Trail Council and recipient of the “Silver Beaver Award.”

He enjoyed working with and supporting the good people of Macungie where he was actively involved with the Macungie Memorial Park Association serving as volunteer board member and president; Macungie Institute Association as a founding board member; creator of the Macungie Flower Park; Das Awkscht Fescht chairman and the Kalmbach Memorial Park serving as trustee.

In his free time, he was a private pilot for 30 years, enjoyed making Punkin Chunkin machines, converting a gas powered pickup to battery power, organizing many canoe trips with friends and family and continually acting as the family entertainment chairman.

He is survived by his wife; children, Donald S., Esq. and his wife, Debra; David R.; William J., all of Macungie; Paul R. and his wife, Kelly, of Virginia Beach, Va.; Nancy E. Kline and her husband, James, of Edgewater, Md.; 11 grandchildren; 11 great-grandchildren; sister, May Swagert, of California.
