Boys take driver’s seat in East Penn Conference

Parkland boys swim team upped its EPC record to 7-0 recently with a 114-69 win at Nazareth (6-1) that leaves Parkland as the only undefeated team in the EPC.

The Trojans are now in the driver’s seat to repeat as EPC champions after at 114-69 win over Nazareth last week.

Parkland took the top two spots in the 200-yard freestyle relay with the team of Gabe Krizel, Pierce Brundage, Eric Friday and Dannik Khais. The team of Jacob Piccini, Khais, Pedro Teran, and Dominic Faenza gave Parkland its second relay win in the 400-yard freestyle relay.

The win in the 400 relay finished a big night for Faenza, who won both of the individual events he was entered in. Faenza won the 200-yard freestyle by :01.25 over teammate Michael Toth with teammate Teran finishing third. In the 500-yard freestyle, Faenza won handily when he finished just over :10 ahead of Brundage.

“I’m really happy with both teams and how they came in here ready to go and ready to win this one,” said Parkland head coach Allison McPeek. “We had a number of really good swims, and I was glad to see that the change in schedules because of the weather didn’t throw us off very much. Our kids just took it all in stride and came out ready to go against a tough team.”

In addition to his two relay wins, Khais also had the top time in the 100-yard freestyle where he edged Nazareth’s Patrick Leach by :00.59 to get the win.

Many times this season the key to a Parkland win has come through depth. Nazareth and Parkland both had six first-place finishes in the meet, but Parkland had nine second-place finishes to just three for Nazareth and had the same results in third-place finishes.

“Our boys have a lot of depth, and they really push each other,” said McPeek. “They realize that’s the key to pick up points. They all want to win and they’re all competitive, but getting those extra points means a lot, especially when you are swimming against a good team like Nazareth.”

Nazareth did not compete in diving, leaving Charlie and Harry Epstein and Bradley Kunz to compete among each other. Kunz was the top finisher with a score of 229.60 with Harry Epstein finishing at 174.50 and Charlie Epstein at 168.40.

Parkland has EPC meets against Freedom (3-3), Liberty (4-2), and Stroudsburg (4-3) as the Trojans look to lock up their first conference championship since 2004. Tuesday’s meets brought the hunt for the EPC title into clearer view. With Emmaus defeating Liberty and Nazareth downing Northampton, there are two teams – Emmaus and Nazareth - right behind Parkland with one loss, but the Trojans have beaten both of those teams, meaning that Parkland would have to suffer losses in two of their last three meets to be denied the EPC championship.
