EHS beats Stroudsburg, falls to Parkland

The Emmaus High School girls basketball team began 2024 on a high note.

The Hornets used a strong first quarter and then held on to defeat Stroudsburg 46-37 at home last Wednesday in an East Penn Conference, marking the team’s second two-game win streak of the 2023-24 season. They weren’t able to keep the streak going as they dropped Monday’s game to rival Parkland, 48-30, at home this past Monday night.

In the win against the Mounties, Emmaus jumped out to a 17-8 lead after the opening quarter, but Stroudsburg responded in the second quarter, outscoring them 11-8 to trail 25-19 at halftime. The Hornets and Mounties went back-and-forth in the second half and Emmaus held a 21-18 advantage and held on for the win.

While nobody scored in double figures, nine different players found the score column, led by nine points each from Gabby DeVita and Olive Whitney. Sylvia Sokolofski tallied seven points and Mya Cooper recorded six.

Against the Trojans, who are still unbeaten in EPC games, the Green Hornets fell behind 15-7 after the opening quarter and then by double digits (26-13) at halftime and were unable to make a comeback. Kayla Snyder tallied a team-high 12 points, including two 3-pointers. Cooper added six points.

Emmaus is at Pocono Mountain East on Friday and then will host Bethlehem Catholic on Tuesday. The Green Hornets are 5-7 overall and an even 4-4 in the conference.
